Listeria Outbreak

According to WebMd listerosis is food poisoning caused by eating foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) bacterium.It is an bacterium found in contaminated soil, water, vegetation, certain animals like poultry, cattle and milk. Listeria, unlike others germs, grows in cold temperatures which makes a refrigerator a perfect breeding ground. In pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection or even stillbirth.

Listeriosis affects mainly pregnant women , newborns, the elderly and adults with impaired immune systems.

What causes Listeriosis:

L. monocytogenes is found in soil and water.

Fruit and vegetables can become contaminated from the soil or from the manure used as fertiliser.

Animals can carry the bacteria and can contaminate meats and dairy products.

Processed foods, such as soft cheeses and cold meat.

Raw or unpasteurised milk or foods made from them.

 The symptoms of listeriosis include fever. muscle aches and nausea or diarrhoea.
