What is Autism?

The first time I ever encountered or heard of the term autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), was back in the period of 2006-2007 and 10 year old me had no idea what it was as much as the specialist tried to explain what it was. See my younger brother was diagnosed with both autism and ADHD-Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in my teenage years I began to understand what it is and had to educate and/or explain to other people why my little brother behaved differently or is they why that he is.

According to (AutismSpeaks) autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) is a range of conditions charaterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one type of autism but many types(hence the term spectrum which reflects the wide  variation of challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism) caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences.

  2. I think this is an important topic as we tend to ignore such disorders.. We need to also learn to respect and learn from people with this disorder.. So as to let them know we're there for them..

    1. Yes it really is an important topic that each of us should ponder and try to get as much information as we can. Because at the end of the day we tend to run away these type of things only to find out that they will affect as in a long run.

  5. Autism is a disability but it doesn't mean that people with it should be looked down upon. I mean as it is characterized by having "Difficulties" in certain way of functioning it doesn't imply that people with cannot function it's just that their Strengths are unique.

The sad part is that if I would stand next to someone and talk to that person for a a long time. But along the line I tell them that I am Mentally disable they automatically draw away from. And then the person with Physical disability is treated differently which is really stigmatizing and causes the situation worse. All of this Mental Disorders: ASD, ADHD,BP, Schizo-effective, Depression, Anxiety and etc. people tend to thing that people with them ARE "CRAZY"
